SCIENTIFIC TALKS PRESENTED AT CONFERENCES/MEETINGS

BRIEF BIO

Dr Aswin Sekhar FRAS is the first professional meteor scientist from India and works as a scientist in the meteor science team for the prestigious Institute of Celestial Mechanics, Paris Observatory, France.

He completed his PhD Physics in 2014 from Queen's University Belfast  (https://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/education/queens-university-graduations-july-9-2014/30418439.html) funded by Govt of UK. He completed his Post Doctoral Fellowship in celestial mechanics in 2018 from University of Oslo, Norway funded by the Norwegian Research Council (https://ras.ac.uk/aswin-sekhar).

He is an Elected Fellow of Royal Astronomical Society London (https://academic.oup.com/astrogeo/article/52/2/2.39/206824?login=false) and full voting member of the International Astronomical Union (https://www.iau.org/administration/membership/individual/16943/) and voting member of American Astronomical Society (https://aas.org/directory?q=sekhar) and life member of Astronomical Society of India (https://www.astron-soc.in/list-of-life-members?combine=aswin+sekhar).

He has been recently selected as one of the six jury members of the prestigious Dannie Heineman prize committee (which is chaired by Physics Nobel Laureate Prof. Andrea Ghez) of the American Astronomical Society and American Institute of Physics for the term 2022-2025: https://aas.org/comms/dannie-heineman-prize-committee

In 2023 Jan, he was selected as the best scientific reviewer award by the prestigious European Journal Elsevier Icarus:
https://www.journals.elsevier.com/icarus/news/best-reviewer-awards-2022-icarus

In 2023 May, he chaired a session on Comets & Trans-Neptunian Objects Dynamics at the American Astronomical Society’s Division of Dynamical Astronomy Conference at Michigan State University  (https://dda.aas.org/meetings/2023/program)

He was selected as a speaker at the international conference ‘Asteroids Comets Meteors 2023’ held at Flagstaff, Arizona, USA in 2023 June 18-23 (https://www.hou.usra.edu/meetings/acm2023/technical_program/?session_no=504)

During this Asteroids Comets Meteors 2023 conference, the American organising committee scientists announced that a minor planet ‘Aswinsekhar’ has been selected and named by International Astronomical Union in his honour recognising his original research works in the field of meteor science.

Global experts in celestial mechanics and meteor science nominated Dr Aswin Sekhar’s name to the International Astronomical Union (IAU) citing his work on resonances and relativity in meteoroid steam dynamics and the IAU nomenclature committee assessed and approved his name and thus this new minor planet name was announced.

More details about this minor planet & the official IAU citation can be found at these
